Measurement systems are the foundation of trade, science, and construction. Today, the world is divided between two major measurement languages: the Metric System (SI) and the Imperial System (US Customary).

The Metric System (SI)

The metric system is a decimal-based system created in France in the late 18th century. It is designed around units of ten, making it highly logical and easy to calculate.

  • Base unit of length: Meter (m)
  • Base unit of weight: Gram (g)
  • Base unit of volume: Liter (l)

Because everything is in powers of ten, converting from centimeters to meters is as simple as dividing by 100.

The Imperial System

The Imperial system developed in the British Empire and was officially defined in 1824. Today, it remains the primary system in the United States.

  • Units of length: Inch, foot, yard, mile
  • Conversion factor: 12 inches = 1 foot; 3 feet = 1 yard

The Modern Agreement: 0.3048

In 1959, the United States and the countries of the British Commonwealth signed the International Yard and Pound Agreement. This agreement defined the yard to be exactly 0.9144 meters and the foot to be exactly 0.3048 meters.

This means that:

  • 1 foot = 30.48 centimeters
  • 1 meter = 3.280839895… feet

This definition bridges the gap between metric and imperial systems, providing the foundation for our high-precision conversions.
